PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING AND EVALUATION

 Psychological Evaluations & Testing

At Empower Counseling, our psychological evaluations provide a comprehensive understanding of how an individual thinks, learns, feels, behaves, and processes the world around them. Whether concerns involve attention, learning, emotional wellbeing, behavior, trauma, or diagnostic clarification, psychological testing helps uncover the underlying factors contributing to current challenges.

Psychological evaluations go far beyond a single test. They involve a thorough review of personal history, clinical interviews, standardized assessment measures, direct observation, and input from important people in the individual's life, such as parents, teachers, caregivers, or other providers. This comprehensive approach allows us to look at areas such as:

  • Cognitive and intellectual functioning
  • Attention and concentration
  • Executive functioning skills
  • Memory and learning abilities
  • Emotional and behavioral functioning
  • Personality and psychological wellbeing
  • Social and adaptive functioning
  • Diagnostic clarification and treatment planning

Because many mental health, behavioral, and developmental conditions share similar symptoms, a comprehensive evaluation helps identify the root causes of concerns rather than simply addressing surface-level symptoms. This allows for more accurate diagnoses and more effective recommendations for treatment, school supports, accommodations, and overall care.

 Why Consider Psychological Testing?

Psychological testing can help answer questions such as:

  • Why am I or my child struggling despite trying hard?
  • What is contributing to behavioral challenges?
  • Are emotional concerns affecting daily functioning?
  • What supports, accommodations, or services would be most helpful?
  • How can treatment be tailored to an individual's specific strengths and needs?

The goal is not simply to assign a diagnosis, but to create a clear picture of an individual's unique strengths, challenges, and needs. This information can guide therapy, educational planning, medication management, and family support strategies.

 Our Evaluation Process

The evaluation process begins with a comprehensive clinical interview and review of history. Based on the information gathered, the psychologist selects assessment measures tailored to the individual's specific concerns and referral questions. Testing may include one-on-one assessment sessions, questionnaires, rating scales, and observation forms completed by parents, teachers, caregivers, or other individuals who know the person well. Once all assessment components are completed, the psychologist carefully integrates the information into a detailed report. At the conclusion of the evaluation, clients receive:

  • A comprehensive written report
  • Diagnostic clarification (when applicable)
  • Personalized recommendations
  • Guidance for treatment, school, workplace, or home supports
  • A feedback session to review results and answer questions

The Value of Psychological Testing

Psychological testing helps transform confusion into understanding. By identifying how an individual processes information, experiences emotions, and responds to their environment, evaluations provide meaningful insights that empower individuals, families, schools, and treatment providers to make informed decisions and build on strengths while addressing areas of need. Our goal is to provide clear answers, practical recommendations, and a roadmap for success.
